Gratitude Practice 2020 Day 191: Alanis Morissette Does Motherhood

I've been a fan of Alanis Morissette since her very first CD dropped into my DiscMan in the glory days of 1995. Jagged Little Pill is one of the best CDs...ever...and I could probably sing every word of every song. Oh, the nostalgia. All I would need is a gallon or two of good old Salon Selective hairspray and my crappy but reliable silver Honda hatchback. Forever a member….and perhaps a founding member...of the angry rage-y female solo performer girl gang of the mid- 90's. The eyeliner. The hair. The pale face. And so much moody and often out of season flannel. Her music is a perfect blend of screechy female emotion and super screechy female emotion and I loved every bit of it. Just a big big fan from day one. Love her voice, her lyrics, her boundary pushing...and now I love her celebration of middle aged motherhood with not just this new hit...but with the way she naturally weaves the realities of motherhood into this performance. Did not know she was back in the music game but the timing feels right and this time...with a handful of kiddos orbiting her far less rage-y yet still very emotive care. Her new hit "Ablaze" is an anthem to her children and her dedication to protecting, providing and nurturing their light. Sing it my sister and go mama Morrissette go!

Grateful for this song and for this sweet recording and for her wise words. Grateful that angsty rock stars can also grow up to be sleepy dedicated ambitious working mamas. Grateful for her musical companionship back then and just as grateful for it now.
