Gratitude Practice 2020 Day 41: Buttered Toast

There is not a lot of bread in our lives these days let alone carby white totally bad for you and completely delicious yet nutritionally garbage white bread. Bread is not really in our regular food rotation because we are middle-aged grown-ups who believe in and seek after silly things like high fiber, multigrain and improving our overall health. Blech and go us! While I know this is a wise and respectable decision it's created a toast shaped void in my life and it's not much fun as I'd choose a hunk of really yummy crusty bread with butter over any pastry, cake or cookie any day of the week...and yet our bread void is real.

But every now and again...when the time seems right we splurge and pick-up a lovely golden brown loaf of crusty sour dough bread and we both savor and celebrate every single bite. This week was one of those worth it kind of weeks and my love and fondness for buttered toast may have reach an all time high. What do they say about absence and hearts growing fonder? This week, I was reminded of the power of buttered toast and I've never been more grateful. Is there anything better than a slice of fresh out of the toaster oven sour dough toast slathered in real butter? I just don't think there is anything better.

Oh...the power of buttered toast. I love bouncing the hot toast from finger to finger after you hear the always cheerful "ding" of the toaster oven...and yes, I always toaster oven...never pop up toaster...as I am no Barbarian. I love the soothing sound of the butter filled knife scrapping over the golden browned bread. I love the scientific process of the butter melting from a creamy dreamy light yellow solid to translucent liquid goodness which both puddles and then hides inside each tiny crevice. I love the satisfaction of the first crunchy bite followed by the soft chewy goodness of this gluten filled treasure. Bread-y yet salty with an after taste of sweet sugary carbs. Crumbs that fall ever so gently on the table or plate or paper towel because yes, sometimes I AM a Barbarian. Buttered toast is life sustaining. Need a quick snack...go for buttered toast. Breakfast on the go...buttered toast will never let you down. Interested in rounding out a meal like soup or salad or anything worth eating...how about adding some buttered toast? Hearts are healed through buttered toast. Conflicts can be easily resolved when buttered toast is shared by two warring parties...I mean how can you remain upset with a slice of buttered toast in hand. Tonight, and let's get real every night, I'm grateful for the saving power of buttered toast...it is the answer... anytime...and every time...
